I wanted to begin sharing a short series of one-minute leadership reflections — what I’m calling Mindful Minutes.
They come from experiences over many years in healthcare leadership, and from a book I’m currently finishing: Servant Leadership – The Quiet Strength that Transforms.
My hope is simply that you find them useful in your own leadership journey.
Leadership often starts with action — decisions, direction, and movement.
But the strongest leaders begin somewhere else: they listen first.
Not to respond.
Not to correct.
But to understand.
When leaders truly listen, something shifts. People feel seen. They feel valued. And over time, they begin to speak more honestly.
That honesty becomes the foundation of trust.
And trust is what makes leadership sustainable.
In healthcare especially, where the stakes are high and the work is demanding, leaders who listen create space for clarity, safety, and better decisions.
Listening is not passive.
It is one of the most active forms of leadership.
Reflection:
Who on your team might feel more heard if you slowed down and listened more fully this week?
Warm regards,
Brian Mitchell
